Sahara Desert challenge

Fearless foursome discovered true adventure in the awe-inspiring Sahara Desert

Fearless Solihull residents discovered true adventure in the awe-inspiring Sahara Desert.

On 09 November, Sharon Harkin, Tracey Pettigrew, Austin Bennett and Anthony Monaghan started their journey to Morocco to take part in an awe-inspiring Sahara Desert adventure, raising money for local Charity, The Lily Mae Foundation. The Lily Mae Foundation was set up by parents, Ryan and Amy Jackson in 2010 following the devastating loss of their daughter Lily Mae to Stillbirth at full term. The charity supports Parents and Families who have suffered the loss of a baby to Stillbirth, Neonatal Death or Medical Termination.

The five-day trek covered 100km passing through Morocco’s forbidding landscape punctuated by peaks, gorges, dunes and oases. At night the trekkers sleep under Africa’s star strewn skies and enjoyed traditional Berber hospitality. The gruelling challenge was The challenge went beyond the Jebel Saghro region, starting on the Maider El Kbir plateau, before ascending Jebel El Mrakib, and admiring the stunning views. Walking through palm gorges, the route joins the dry Rhris River and heads towards an oasis of tamarisk trees. The final days were spent trekking along the Tikertouachene River, before celebrating a successful end to the challenge in Ouarzazate.

Sharon Harkin said “It was a privilege to work on behalf and alongside the Lily Mae Foundation to help raise so much money and awareness for the fantastic work they do. The training and the fundraising became such a focus that it was only when we got to the desert that the true enormity of what we were doing hit us. The memories of the views, the terrain, the humble Berber people who took such good care of us, and the simplicity of life in a world so far removed from the one we inhabit will stay in my memories forever.’

Austin Bennett said “life changing experience doing Sahara trek with like-minded people giving time to worthy charities. A reality check to say the least!!!” Tracey Pettigrew said “The vastness of the landscape is what I will take with me. Staring out at dunes which reached as far as the eye could see in every direction. Truly awesome!”

The group raised over £12,000 for The Lily Mae Foundation. A huge amount of money that will continue to help the charity to provide its support to those parents and families who have suffered the devastating loss of a baby to stillbirth, neonatal death or medical termination. Ryan and Amy Jackson said “a truly remarkable and emotional challenge that has been completed by such a humble group. From the moment we met the group you could see the determination to succeed and their interest in the charity and how much their challenge to support the families who suffer the loss of a baby meant to them. We appreciate the amazing support that these guys have shown!”

Balsall Common Fun Run 2019

Balsall common fun run start line

ORGANISERS of the sixth Balsall Common Fun Run have paid tribute to everyone who took part in a record-breaking event.

The Fun Run on Sunday (September 22) was organised by The Lily Mae Foundation who support bereaved parents and their families following the loss of a baby to Stillbirth or Neonatal Death.  Such families were among those taking part, in memory of their babies.

The Fun Run, now in its sixth year, is held for two main reasons;

  1. To put something back in to the community for the support shown to the Lily Mae Foundation and the work it carries out for Bereaved Parents and their Families.
  2. To enable Bereaved Parents and their Families to take part in memory of their babies.

The inclement weather did not stop the 900 runners (200 more than in 2018) who took part with hundreds of spectators joining them at the start and finish lines as well as lining the streets of Balsall Common to cheer on their family members and friends who took on the 5km or 10km course.

Amy and Ryan Jackson said: “Following on from the success of the fun run in in the last five years, the trustees of the foundation, who are all volunteers, put in an enormous amount of time and hard work to make the fun run the best yet.

“The support from our volunteers leading up to and at the event was magnificent.

“The event really does pull the community together. The Balsall Common Fun Run is growing in stature and is now regularly attracting more than 700 runners and walkers every year.

“With our slogan ‘Walk, Jog, Run, Race’, 2019 was a record year for entrants with over 900 people taking part, helped by the run now being part of the Warwickshire Road Race League Calendar.

“The feedback that we have received from the runners, marshals and spectators, who lined the route or watched at the start and finish line at the Heart of England School, has been exceptionally positive.

“We have already been asked for the date for next year’s run. Without the support of the event’s sponsors it would not be possible to hold such a large-scale event”.

These are: University of Warwick Sport and Wellness Hub, Physio and Health Matters Balsall Common, Signarama Birmingham South (Signage Sponsor), Aldi UK, Guy Salmon LandRover Coventry (Safety Car Sponsor), EMBRACE, Kingsman Estate Agents, Sainsbury’s and JP Conference and Events.

The event was supported by the new Sports and Wellness Hub at the University of Warwick – which is part of a £49 million state-of-the-art sports complex at the University.

It is set to open in Spring 2019 and will include a 230-station gym, a 25-metre swimming pool, multi-purpose sports halls, a cutting-edge climbing wall, six squash courts and a range of outdoor sports pitches and will be open to the community.

Wolf Run 2018 is a success (even though it was messy!!)

Based in Leamington Spa The WOLF Run is an innovative off-road 10K obstacle run that provides a unique mix of running trails through woodland, open ground and water, alongside a series of challenging natural and man-made obstacles to test strength, ingenuity and determination and The Lily Mae Foundation took part in this fantastic event!!

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the 25 Lily Mae Foundation Wolf Run Pack who took part in the Wolf Run on Saturday 01 September 2018 helping us to raise over £1000 to support Parents and Families who suffer babyloss.

We had a great day (even though we got muddy)!!
The Lily Mae Foundation have taken part for the last four years and intend to continue to with our participation in the coming years. The WOLF Run is a friendly race attracting experienced and beginners runners with the course devised to encourage participants to help each other over, under and through each obstacle!!

The Wolf Run stands for Woods, Obstacles, Lakes and Fields, so you can imagine what to expect! The obstacles along way include climbing huge fallen trees, wading and swimming through deep, murky water, pulling each other up near-vertical mud slopes and crawling under dense vegetation. The design of each course is overseen and tested by a fitness professional with a Masters in Sports Science and years of experience in functional fitness training.

The course designer Charlie Moreton says: “We go to great lengths to design original, challenging courses that encourage runners to use their bodies functionally and naturally – running, climbing, swimming, wading and crawling. Our year-round access to the course means that we can build a series of man-made obstacles that ensure a total body workout. The Wolf Run is designed to test experienced runners, but our experienced marshals ensure that a leg up is available to any newcomers to off-road running. The Run encourages participants to work as a team and help each other over, under and through the obstacles – with a few surprises on the way to keep everyone on their toes!”

The Lily Mae Foundation have taken part for the last three years and intend to continue to with our participation in the coming years. The WOLF Run is a friendly race attracting experienced and beginners runners with the course devised to encourage participants to help each other over, under and through each obstacle. Many run in groups (or wolf packs..) with friends and families and with every fifth runner running for free. Spectators are encouraged too, to provide support for all competitors. After the race there is a party with music, hog roast, cake stall and a bar! Just what good obstacle racing is about, pushing the body to the limit and then enjoying a beer and food after!
